It would be surprising if two completely different methods of generating the UI produced the same error.
You can probably avoid most of the use cases for coming out of full screen mode by moving to another virtual desktop. The keystrokes Frank gave work with most Linux desktops, but in Gnome — which I use (I'm currently running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) — it is Super+PageUp/Super+PageDown.
If RO traps the standard keystroke you might find that changing to a combination involving the Super (i.e. Windows) key helps.
