Gentlemen,
Many thanks - you gave me the clue I needed !
The missing component was "build-essential". I stupidly assumed it was
already installed, but just checked and realised it wasn't there.
Have now installed it and retried - worked first time and RPCemu is now
running fine.
Sorry for being a such a dipstick, but sometimes when you're tearing
your hair out, you just don't see the obvious.
