Did some Googling, and from my reading it seems that the System
Preferences -> View -> Keyboard has an option to Enable "Use all F1, F2,
etc. keys as standard function keys." With that selected the top keys
alone return F1-F12, and with Fn they return the icon (speaker volume
etc). With it NOT selected it should be the other way round, so Fn+F1-12
should have worked ... but for me they adjusted sound etc regardless of
whether Fn was pressed or not.
