That's about 5 different incompatible versions of automake, from 1.4 to 1.9.
On Debian these are the automake1.x packages and automake-1.x binaries. You
may have to ensure you're using the right one. Does the original sources
give any clues as to what automake was previously used?

If you can avoid it, generally it's safer not to rerun autoconf or automake
because of this version issue (and sometimes they're built with m4 files
that aren't supplied).
