Well, that was May, now it's December (cue Broadway hit
song).
I don't know why it's taken me so long to get round to
implementing this solution when it turns out to be
trivially easy!
The solution was to use apt to install aptitude and then
use aptitude to install the build-essentials. After that it
was all plain (and familiar) sailing.
