An easy way to examine the current unixlib conversion is to have
!Moonfish running and the shared directory open in RISC OS and Linux
simultaneously

I think the most natural way to allow "./." ".//." is to escape them
with the "\" character as this can be entered from the Linux side
in a normal way.
"\.\." as a name is OK under Linux and would allow creation of this
legitimate in RISC OS name, but the escape character "\" is being
converted to "?5C" at the moment.
Given that "\" is not allowed in a RISC OS name, I think all
occurrences of it could simply be removed at riscosifying time.
Instances of "./." or any number of purely "/" characters in a name
would be a special case requiring them to be preceded by as many
"\" as needed at unixifying time.

I am looking for the most likely way it would be implemented in
unixlib permanently so it would give all programs using ,xyz
compatibility one day.

Many thanks. John and Michael. Removing ASprites files did not help but upgrading
SpriteExtend from 0.61 (in the 3.5 ROM) to 0.99 has fixed the problem.

I have been aware that 3.5 is no longer supported but I must say I have been
pleasantly surprised at how well NetSurf has run. Ever since discovering
NetSurf I have only had to update two or three modules.

Or just ensure that a sufficiently modern SpriteExtend[1] is present,
which is what I've done. However, it's worth reiterating that the
earliest version of RISC OS we actually support is 4.02, so anyone
running anything earlier is running the risk of things breaking.

J.

1. Version 0.99, as found in RISC OS 3.60, which is rapidly approaching
its 18th birthday. Seriously, people, upgrade your OS or don't
expect modern software to run on it.

Just a foot note. please. In examining the NetSurf.log I noticed the
following,

(299.280000) image/image_cache.c image_cache_fini 439: Total images never
rendered: 31 (includes 28 that were converted)
(299.280000) image/image_cache.c image_cache_fini 443: Total number of
excessive conversions: 0 (from 0 images converted more than once)

out of interest, is this significant in some way?

Sounds like something went wrong here:

http://source.netsurf-browser.org/netsurf.git/commit/!NetSurf?id=a6b117fcb43b8afea584ff2e6ec3e808f27f8d9f

I think the answer is probably to simply remove the ASprites.

I have two problems with Netsurf.
1. Build #1013 will not connect to the internet. Still need to use 2.9. I have VARPC
on my Mac G5 PPC OS 10.5.8.
2. On my Risc PC running 3.5 the NetSurf icon disappears with all versions I've tried
since #734. When loaded there is a blank space on the icon bar. I can click on it
and NetSurf appears and runs normally. The icon appears in the directory viewer
immediately after download but disappears from the viewer leaving only the name
once the programme is loaded.

Iem 1. was the subject of some discussion in January but I haven't been aware of a
fix. I haven't seen any comment on item 2.

Cheers, Alan in N.Z.

Maybe simply lack of patience on my part.

Tried the same email again with dv #1013 plus JavaScript. HTML loaded
successfully.

However, I then tried an Alt/Break > Quit on NetSurf, which exited cleanly
- except that, trying to restart NetSurf gave a message,

'Cannot open <Wimp$ScrapDir> WWW.Netsurf.log for I/O redirection'

requiring a reboot before NetSurf would restart.

Then, examination of the log showed a previous successful exit.

Using NetSurf 1013 I can see this, though describing it as a "problem"
seems a little harsh, rather I would just describe it as a page which,
so far, doesn't render well in NetSurf. With JavaScript disabled the
site renders remarkably well given the nag on each page to use
JavaScript and to install Adobe Flash Player.

The issue on this page I would like to see fixed (if possible) is that
the breadcrumbs, "Photostream - Sets - Map - Fovorites" etc render as
a column rather than being arranged across the page; this with
JavaScript enabled or disabled.

I'm disappointed to see that the problem is still there. When I have looked
closely as the page loads I see that with JS on the picture isn't
downloaded.

I suspect Andre's method of download decompressed it when creating the
local file but didn't change the filename. I think it was mislead by
incorrect headers from the marutan.net server.

The `Content-Encoding: x-gzip' means that the data transferred has been
gzip'd and must be gunzip'd to obtain the `Content-Type:
application/x-gzip'; IOW, it's been double-gzip'd. Unfortunately, it
hasn't, nor would it make sense to do so, so the gunzip leaves a
non-gzip'd tar file called rpcemu-0.8.10.tar.gz.

Modern browsers, e.g. Firefox, have workarounds for broken servers.

That's just a modern GNU tar looking at the file's contents rather than
relying on the filename.

Odd. It's definitely a gzipped tar and not an uncompressed one and on
my Linux box it decompresses fine whether it has a .tar or .tar.gz
extension or no extension at all. On what OS did you download it?

Hi

Of late, when loading Pluto mail with HTML content, sometimes rendering
fails to complete, goes into a loop, and Alt/Break freezes the machine.

A7000+ OS 4.02

Re: copy and paste urls from webpage

The following bytes were arranged on 26 Mar 2013 by Richard Porter :

> Incidentally Shift-Select-click = Object > Link > Download target

One of the things I most wish NetSurf would do is an option to invoke
the download window externally - i.e. links sent over the AcornURI
protocol, which may have originated in an email, or possibly even
manually extracted from the source of a page which NetSurf doesn't want
to play nice with.

In the case that said link goes to, say, a large image, it would be so
useful to be able to directly download it without being forced to wait
for NetSurf to attempt to render it first.

This could probably be satisfactorily fixed just by adding an extra
button to the 'Open URL' window.

So Whoopeee! turns into whoopsee... Ooer!

Indeedy you are so right Tony, I'd only tested it on a Data CD, but after
your note... Obviously not fixed.

Interestingly, yesterday when I returned the rpc.cfg, cdrom_type to the
default settings it didn't work on a Data CD either, I should have seen

I never knew Shift-Adjust-click did this trick till Tony Moore
enlightened us here. And then, of course, I see that interactive Help
has been enlightening us all the time -- methinks I'll leave it
switched on now and then, even on familiar apps, to see what further
enlightenment I gain.

To export the url of the page you are ON (i.e., the addressbar, as
opposed to a link IN THE BODY of the page) simply drag* it to a
textfile. Or Shift-drag it to a directory, where it appears with the
filetype URL. Easier than using the menu "Page > Save location >
...".
(*Some versions of the OS allow ordinary drag to select parts of a
writable field such as the addressbar. In that case, use Ctrl-drag.
Those versions probably also support Ctrl-A Ctrl-C to copy the
contents of the addressbar to the clipboard.)
Netsurf's interactive help doesn't mention these actions.

I was thinking particularly of a news page I maintain which can have tens
of very similar links and to find the correct one in an editor you have
to invoke search and still I have ended up with the wrong one! Agreed
that on a very simple page, what you describe is adequate for the task.

Pleased to see that <Select><Adjust> pops up in !Help with NetSurf so it
shouldn't be news to anyone. ;-)

Wow. That would be an extreme way of extracting a URL from even only a
20KB web page. If you've seen some of mine, you wouldn't want to do that
unless you have lots of time to waste!

As others have said, <Shift><Adjust> over the link pops up a URL save box
which can even be dragged to a NetSurf address field or nearly anywhere
else you want it to be.

That's just a short cut for Object > Link > Save > ANT URL
It doesn't copy the URL to the clipboard.

Incidentally Shift-Select-click = Object > Link > Download target

Shift-adjust-click on a link allows its URL to be saved where you will.

copy and paste urls from webpage

Is there an easy way to select an url on a webpage in order to get it
into the clipboard?

If you try to stripe a selectable field the arrow pointer turns into
the hand and it won't mark the text.
If you start the stripe before the url or after the url and stripe
backwards you always pick up extraneous characters.

It's just a list of changes. The release announcement will say in plain
english what the main changes are from a user's point of view.

For example, the NetSurf 2.9 announcement:

"NetSurf 2.9 contains many improvements over the previous release.
The most significant changes are new multi-tasking behaviour,
optimised URL handling, fetcher optimisations, cache optimisations,
and faster CSS selection."

I'm sure this wasn't the kind of input you were asking for, but:

> Added early and promotive JavaScript support.

"primitive"?

> Textarea widget now supports double/trivial click selections.

"triple"?

> Use textarea widget for HTML form text, passowrd and textarea input.

"password"?

Also, I'm thinking, depending on whether this log is intended for
end-user or developer consumption, it might be a good idea to separate
out the user-facing changes/fixes ("Don't abort HTML redraw when bad
image fails to convert.") from under-the-bonnet ones ("Optimised file:
fetcher where mmap is available."). Some clearer prioritising of
particularly obvious fixes or particularly complex changes would be
nice, too. Again, I may be missing the point, though.

NetSurf 3.0

We're aiming to have NetSurf 3.0 ready for release on 20 April 2013.

Ideally we'll be creating the release tag at least a week before that.

Currently the NetSurf 3.0 change log looks like this:

http://www.netsurf-browser.org/temp/ChangeLog

Please check it over for anything missing, or wrong.

Briefly, the big changes in the core are:

Using LibDOM instead of LibXML.
Fetch, parse of CSS in parallel with HTML.
New textareas.
And the (disabled by default) limited JS support.
Loads of fixes and internal tidying.

Please try CI build #1009 or later. When editing multi-line textareas,
the redraw area has been reduced significantly in some common cases.

Update notification

I have recently been ranting elsewhere about how banks could identify if a
bank account balance had changed since a previous access to avoid lengthy
authentication procedures to no sensible avail.

It occurs to me that the NetSurf download site could do something similar:
Leave a cookie with the last development version noted, and then only offer
a subsequent version, otherwise terminating the potential download, perhaps
with an appropriate message!

OK - makes my software potentially redundant - but so much more
user-friendly!

Just an idea, not thought through though (bedtime soon!).

Thanks Micheal that's a lot better.

Still a little flickering but it doesn't miss keystrokes like before.

I know it is a small improvement for everyone else but small performance
improvements will hopefully help allround.

My shell script experience is negligible, and I have trouble making the

I've updated the single line textarea (used for search boxes and
passwords), to reduce unnecessary redraw in some cases. Please try CI
build #1000 or later and let me know if it's any better.

For multi-line textareas, it's a bit more complex. I'll work on them
next. I've already done little -- scrollbars won't be redrawn with every
letter you type now, unless the input actually forces the textarea to
scroll.

That depends entirely on what language it's written in, and how easy it

Would it be possible to stop generating the summary section at the end?
I find it doesn't really add anything and doubles the length of the

The one thing it really would be useful to have a summary of are all the
commit messages, which can currently only be found by interactively
searching for "commitdiff".

Text area refresh

While work is being done on textareas maybe it is a good time to raise this again ?

When typing in a textarea, each key press causes a refresh of the entire textarea.

You may not notice this on a fast cpu but on a 68060 it is very noticeable
and the more text there is, the slower it gets.

Could this be improved by just refreshing the current line ?

As John Williams pointed out, it seems to be Frank de Bruijn. The aconet
website, which is the home of Fetch_NS has a little bit of Dutch at the top &
has the brilliant CrypStore, which I know is one of his apps.

http://aconet.org/tools/index.php

On delving a bit further into Fetch_NS, I need to alter the settings file to
tell it where my Netsurf is stored to make it work best. As suggested, I'll
now take this over to c.s.a. apps.

Thanks for help so far.

I can see that, but you have a lot of technical knowledge that a lot

Probably. I have that version, and it does delete the current version,
and unpack and run the new one.

However the (anonymous, German) author of that version, heavily
modified from John's original, specifically asked that questions or
comments about this version should not be posted here, but instead to
c.s.a.apps.

I suggest we take it there, where I will be pleased to try to explain
how to configure that version, which involves changing some if its
obey files. That is, if it's still of interest to anyone. It's
certainly off-topic here.

With best wishes,

Try having your de-archiving program (SparkFS or whatever) loaded and
on the icon bar before you run FetchNS. This improved the success rate
to 100% here (admittedly on a sample of only 3 downloads) after having
exactly the problem you describe; I imagine something in FetchNS times
out while waiting for the archive to be opened.

Anyway it isn't too hard to download the archives from the Netsurf
site and manually install the program and I have reverted to doing it
that way.

It IS at the top if you use the slightly different link that

How odd. I see you seem to be on an Iyonix so RiscOS 6? Could that make a
difference? I can't see how. I wonder what behaviour others get. I've re-read
the idiots guide & can't see much to help but I will have a look at where I

That is the same as mine - Fetch_NS version 2.10 of 17-12-2012 which
does what I said above. Before deleting the old version it also quits
any NetSurf that is running then restarts the new one.

But a good day happens about one in three. More common is that it
forces NS to quit, deletes the current NS then fails to find the new
one. So I have to complete the job manually.

But that can be done by deleting the one in use and opening the
previous zip file.

Having just one operating version 'visible' in the filer means it
works automagically on boot-up or when a URL on my pinboard is
activated. !Fetch_NS works like this, doesn't it?

No need for extra directories - the numbered zip files serve that
purpose.

Surely?

I see what you mean.
Try here:
http://ci.netsurf-browser.org/builds/riscos/

Scroll to the bottom for the latest release (ie highest number) -
wouldn't it be nice if that was at the top?
Click on the blue writing (notice the pointer changes to a little
hand with a rude pointy finger) which will download the zip file
Position caret before the release number in the Destination box and
press Ctrl-K which deletes superfluous parts of the file name
Drag the zip icon (top of the download window) to the already opened
filer window on your Hard Drive
When it's located, Double-Click on it to open
Drag the blue !Netsurf icon over your existing copy if you have
one...

Couldn't be simpler... or could it?

Hope that helps :-)

Yes, these seem to work for me. Thank you.

Saving selected text or copy to clipboard from a textarea doesn't work
(can't remember if they ever did). The only Selection menu entry

I totally agree with this reason for using Fetch_NS. Mind you, I think
there are more than one version of it floating around; the one I have
says it's version 2.10, but I can't remember who wrote this. It's
certainly very different from the original version. A note in the !Run
file says, "This is a seriously modified version of John Williams'
Fetch_NS."

Its because, on a good day**, it will automatically delete the current
version of NetSurf and replace it with the latest version if it has
changed.

FWIW I always look at the development site to see what has changed. If
NS has changed and the change is likely to be relevant to RISC OS then
I run the fetch program.

Thanks. I think I've found the right one now. I have Adjust 4.39 so the
settings file seemed to be here...

IDEFS::h-4.$.!Boot.Choices.Users.Single.Fetch_NS.Settings

I've changed that as well so fingers crossed.
Unfortunately, the Fetch_NS help file didn't specify too clearly where I
should look.

Only if you deleted the file <Choices$Write>.Fetch_NS.Settings.

The Defaults file is only used (and copied as Settings to Fetch_NS's
Choices directory) if a Settings file does not exist there already.

In reply to my reply..

The file I needed to alter was.....

!Fetch_NS.Resources.Defaults

I've done that now but can't test it until the next version of Netsurf is
available.
