Retrocomputing devroom at FOSDEM 2018

Hi,
I just found out someone managed to get a retrocomputing devroom
accepted at FOSDEM:

https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/retrocomputing-devroom/2017-October/000000.html

https://www.elpauer.org/2017/10/retrocomputing-devroom-call-for-participation/comment-page-1/

Who's going to propose a talk about NetSurf?

François.

The page loads ok with NS 4100, RO 6.20, RPCEmu.

Always keep them on unless troubleshooting but even when off I still
see no image. Likewise with Javascript - whether on or off makes no
difference. Why do other see the image?

There may be a clue - some others report NS does not load the image.

Even when it doesn't cause the crash here the image doesn't display. So
some ARMX6 display the image - some don't.

Page causes crash

Thanks eveyone.

Proves it's not a Netsurf thing, or an ARMX6 thing, but it must be a clash
with something installed on my ARMX6.

I'll keep looking.

VRPC RISC OS 4.02

Page causes crash

This may not be a Netsurf thing, but it happens rarely on anything other
than Nersurf.

The whole of this ARMX6's networking crashes. The only way I have found to
recover is a reset.

I have found a page which seems to cause this fairly reliably:
http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/water-vole-hole.html

Does this happen to anyone else?
RO 5.23 (29-Jun-16)

A bit behind the curve version-wise I can reach that page on #4085 with
Javascript off and by selecting 'contact us' from the 'menu' which
overlays the content. Ditto the other links.

I had previously done a Qwant site search
contact site:watervoles.com

https://lite.qwant.com/?q=contact+site%3Awatervoles.com&t=web
and must have picked this page out of the history.

BTW: Qwant is a French search engine and is well worth investigating. I
have it set as Home page.

As do I, Brian. Though without HTMLtidy as these days most pages involve
being constructed with PHP. I still try to make things NetSurf usable but
it is falling behind wrt what can be achieved on even the cheapest phone
or tablet. Corners, shadows, hover, to name but a few.

Thankfully, it's easy to have a NetSurf only CSS file which provides
alternatives to flex containers and suchlike but this often needs more
than HTML in order to read the browser string and take the appropriate
action.

Yes, with Javascript 'off' this is true. The reason why that list of
links has appeared in such a daft position is simply because the
<noscript><div> has no style or class associated with it so it appears in
the current position, top-left of the current container. Its links do at
least work.

Perhaps this alteration by the site's author would help:
<noscript><div style="position:fixed; left:5px; top:5px;">

('fixed' places things relative to window instead of being in the current
container)

The respnses here make me think others are not seeing the same thing, so
there is a screen shot at

NetSurf is correctly using the <noscript><div> option but these don't work
properly.

Yeah. I spent ages some time back trying to get to the bottom of why I
couldn't get some hover-and-drop CSS code to work. The reason was that I
was using RISC OS to develop sites, mainly because of StrongED and the
command line access to HTML Tidy, but then I was testing the code on
Netsurf. I continue to use RISC OS to write web stuff but these days
always test it in Chrome on the other side.

It's great example of a page which uses Javascript to no advantage but
even if hover-and-drop menus are implemented with only CSS they don't
work in NetSurf either. :-(

Of course, now it works :)

I feel that it's linked to the fact that RISC OS can't boot into
desktop on my config (no Hostfs, so no !Boot)
I always had intermitent problems (load too high or too low) when
booting in CLI mode.
Nota: when changing the processor type, it crashes on reboot.

Still hope for user mode networking, and perhaps a port of the open
source CallWin32 module... It could help for Windows integration.

Bye, David

A repeatable error occurs using OS5.23 (12-Oct-17) on both Windows 10 and
Ubuntu 17.10. Shutdown the desktop and click on ?Restart?.

Otherwise it is going rather well. Many thanks.

This log is from Windows 10, both interpreter and recompiler show the issue.

Hi David, we've not been able to reproduce this issue yet, can you tell us
the exact version of RISC OS 5 you are using and can you post the
rpclog.txt.

A quick note to say I was able to reproduce it and commit a fix.

'Reduce CPU usage' (on RISC OS 5) is almost impossible to use under CLI
(F12 or no desktop).
0,1 MIPS all the time. Even keyboard entries become slow.

I don't think it is related to the compilation itself, I think
there just needs to be a lot of activity that slows down the
emulator's responsiveness.

I just reproduced it with a filer window while doing a
large amount of file copying.

> Does it need to be the task window, or any window?

I just reproduced it with a filer window, so probably any window.

> Were you in fullscreen, windowed mode, or does it happen in both?

Only happens in windowed mode.

I had 1024x768@8pp active. But also happens in 800x600@32bpp which
I just tried.

Follow Host Mouse mode. Does not happen in capture mode.

My theory would be that moving the host mouse beyond the emulator
window's bounds results in an illegal mouse position update.

Hi Steffan, I've not been able to reproduce this crash yet, as such,
here's a lot of questions.

Does it require the compilation to be happening in the task window or is
it all the time?
Does it need to be the task window, or any window?
Were you in fullscreen, windowed mode, or does it happen in both?
Which wimp mode are you in, does it happen in other colour depths or
resolutions?
If you're in windowed mode were you using 'Follow Host Mouse', or the
capture mode when that is turned off?

I can look into that

For the last couple of years the recompiler has supported all the ARM CPU
models. There no speed benefit for StrongARM as we emulate them in the
same way, so we stick to ARM610 as this is compatible with all versions of
RISC OS from 3.5 onwards.

This has actually changed from 0.8.15 where we did capture the mouse in
the error box, but as I was changing the code for Qt I couldn't make up my
mind if this was the correct behaviour. There's not really a good option
here :(

[Rpcemu] Networking - RCPemu v0.8.14 Win 10 64 bit v1703

I have followed the instructions regarding the PC set up for
Networking but have been unable to get it working. Are we sure these
instructions will work on Win 10 64 bit?

Win Network connections show 3

Ethernet, Net 2, Status connected.

Network Bridge
Unidentified
No Network access

rpcemu, TAP Windows Adapter v9
Not connected

I presume the settings on the RO side would be the same as on my ARMX6
regarding the gateway & DNS. It does not report a Network not
available error on start up.

I wonder if anyone might have time to help me with this?

It was also straightforward to compile for Mac, and it boots and sound
works. Keyboard doesn't work, because macOS doesn't provide
QKeyEvent::nativeScanCode()

I think it might be possible to cobble up something from guesswork based on
other fields provided by QKeyEvent:: but it won't be perfect.
In particular it can't distinguish left/right Shift, and caps-lock-off
doesn't generate events. I think the numeric keypad might be unavailable
too. It also may not play nicely with different Mac-side keyboard layouts.

My guess would be RISC OS Qt would need something similar - either an
implementation of nativeScanCode() and a keyboard_riscos.c translation to
PS/2 codes, or a fudge as above.

Due to there being a port of Qt5 available for RISC OS RPCEmu now runs on
RISC OS. :-) I've only tried RISC OS 5 so far but everything seems to work
OK apart from keyboard input, sound and networking. I think this is a
limitation of the RISC OS port of Qt5.
It averages about 18 MIPS in the desktop on a Titanium. (RISC OS 5 on RISC
OS 5).

Chris.

Re: [Rpcemu] RPCEmu pre release test version 0.8.99

To make my previous crash report a bit more complete...

I could not reproduce the issue with RPCEmu 0.8.15.

I am running RO 4.02 fully patched (ROMPatch 5 I think) on
Windows 7 Ultimate.

Make your your system clock is set. (Rember empty NVRAM....)
If that doesn't help - make sure the netsurf package was unpacked
completly and that all files can be read.

-What is it? A web browser!
---------------------------
-
- NetSurf is a multi-platform web browser which is written with
- portability and speed in mind.
- This is the native Port for the FreeMiNT OS.
- More info at project website: www.netsurf-browser.org
-
-
-Minimum System Requirements:
-----------------------------
-
- - 32 MB RAM ( 48 MB recommended for demanding websites )
- - 32 MHz ( 60 Mhz recommended )
- - At least 15 Bit Graphics card.
- - FreeMiNT 1.17.0 release kernel (Please look at FAQ to read
- about TOS support) for full & correct network support.
-
-
-Main Features:
---------------
-
- - Very good HTML 4 & CSS 2.1 rendering
- - HTTPS
- - Freetype2 font rendering
-
-
-Missing Features:
------------------
-
- This section describes Features that NetSurf-Core offers but which are not
- handled by the GEM frontend currently.
-
- - Grapical website history dialog
-
-
-Installation Notes:
--------------------
-
- Unpack the compressed archive that you downloaded,
- change into the new directory and run ns.prg.
- If something isn't working - run ns.prg within an console and
- enable logging:
-
- ./ns.prg -v
-
- that makes it possible, that you can identify the problem.
-
-
-Additional Notes
-----------------
-
- If you would like to see the above mentioned features or
- can't run NetSurf because you only have a 16 or 256 Color system
- get in contact.
-
- Please also check the FAQ document.
-
- Want to have other software ported? Get in contact and make me rich >;-)
- If you want to help with netsurf, contact me for further info
- or visit the netsurf svn and add something usefull :)
-
- This is "just an early" alpha release. I wanted to get things moving on
- and I think it is good to show the Atari-Users what has been archived
- so far. This release lacks some features and some of the code written
- was just coded with an "I have to get this done quickly" attitude.
- This is especially true for the drawin routines... It doesn't offer
- offscreen bitmaps, which was one of my goals for a release. But
- I dropped that in favor of an not-so-delayed release.
-
-
-Known Bugs
-----------
-
- - "View Source" only works when the configured editor is already launched.

Hi,

just wanted to let you know that, despite your fearings, the atari version still can be compiled using your toolchain. I just managed to produce a working version which can be found here , and a screenshot here. There have been only a few pitfalls with it. My first attempt was to use the cross-compiler that i already had installed (in /usr), setting the environment accordingly. That got me trapped by statements like CC := $(wildcard $(GCCSDK_INSTALL_CROSSBIN)/*gcc) which expanded to more than one gcc installed there. So i installed your pre-build jenkins toolchain, and that left only a few minor problems.

The first was that in a few places (both Makefiles and shell scripts if i remember correctly) /bin/which was used to locate programs. There is no such thing on my system, it is installed in /usr/bin where it belongs, so i had to create a link for this.

Then i had to patch env.sh to use zypper instead of apt-get (patch attached below). The reason why i checked for zypper in the first place is that on the system i use (SuSE tumbleweed) there is also a brain-damaged apt-get script that trys to be a wrapper for zypper but fails most of the time.

Then there was a problem with nsgenbind using a cross-compiler toolchain. Didn't look how that is handled in other environments, but for the atari version it is looked up on the path, but wasn't build for the host before. So i had to clean everything, build for the host, then moved the executable to some other place on the path, before starting over again.

After that, i finally was able to compile the Atari version. Took me bit to get accustomed to the build system (its a bit strange to use $HOST when you actually mean $TARGET when running env.sh ;), and at the same time use $HOST in the Makefiles when you mean the build system), but, thanks to your excellent documentation, took only a few hours to put everything together.

After that, i changed a few places that the compiler mentioned. You will find the patches attached below. There were also bunch of other warnings in non-atari related code, i have attached the text output from it if you want to take a look at it.

I have now also used a different toolchain (putting it in the places your SDK expects), which is using gcc 7.2, and some updated libraries. The result can be found here It was compiled using the cross-compiler that you find on that page.

Happy hacking, and keep up the good work, hope you don't decide to drop the Atari version, it's the only browser on this platform that is still maintained ;)

Thorsten
